This Religious drama was released on December 1st 2006, filmed in Italy and Morocco
and directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. King Herod fears the coming of the Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament. Fear of losing his kingdom, makes him order the slaughter of all male children under the age of two in Bethlehem. One year before that event, in Jerusalem, Zechariah a priest in the Holy Temple, is told by God that he shall be a prophet and his wife will have a child allthough she is past her child-bearing years. He doesn't believe that and God makes him dumb. in Nazareth Mary has to marry Joseph a man she doesn't know. In an olive grove where she is reflecting on the situatiom she is visited be the archangel Gabriel who tells her that she is going to bear the son of God. In Persia, the three Magi, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar know that a celestial event is about to occur, which will be signal for the coming of the Messiah. Melchior convinces his fellow scientists to undertake the journey to Judeah, following a star that will bring them there. Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, her cousin. Elizabeth is in the midst of a pregnancy allthough she is quite old for having a child. Mary returns to Nazareth after the birth of John the Baptist, at the same time Zechariah regains his speech. Joseph has to return to Bethlehem, his city of bith, which King Herod had ordered, Following a decree from Rome. In this way Herod believes that he will find the Messiah. Joseph walks the entire way, and Mary's appreciation for him grows stronger and stronger. While Mary and Joseph slowly find their way, the Magi, are spotted by the soldiers of Herod and forced to visit the King. Herod wants them to find the new messiah and bring him the news of his whereabouts. A shepherd lets Mary and Joseph use his stable and grotto where Jesus is born. |
